Thich Nhat Hahn was a monk known for his teachings on mindfulness and peace. His chief teaching was that through mindfulness, we can learn to live in the present moment, and develop true peace, both with oneself, and with the world. He published over 100 titles on mindfulness, meditation, and engaged Buddhism, including The Miracle of Mindfulness, Peace is Every Step, and You Are Here. He has sold more than five million books in the United States alone.

Thich Nhat Hahn was a pioneer in spreading Buddhism across the globe. He founded eleven monasteries and dozens of practice centers in the United States, Asia, and Europe. He was also responsible for the creation of over 1,000 local mindfulness practice communities, known as ‘sanghas.’ He assembled a community of over 600 nuns and monks, who helped him spread his teachings of mindfulness, community-building, and peace-making. These teachings were applied in schools, businesses, workplaces, and prisons, worldwide.

During a 1996 trip, Thich Nhat Hahn met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize and referred to him as “an Apostle of peace and nonviolence.”

Thich Nhat Hahn passed away on January 22, 2022 at the age of 95.
