The Greenlining Institute

About The Greenlining Institute

A non-profit organization that uses a multifaceted approach to improve the material conditions of communities of color in California and beyond.

The Greenlining Institute aims to create a future in which communities of color can build wealth, live in healthy places, filled with economic opportunity, and are ready to meet the challenges posed by climate change. They see the economy, environmental policy, and health care not as separate issues, but as an interconnected web of opportunity that must be addressed wholly. Because of this, Greenlining works on a variety of major policy issues, with the goal of addressing the root causes of racial, economic, and environmental inequities. Greenlining works toward this goal by publishing research and policy frameworks, advancing practical policy solutions, and monitoring and influencing actual implementation of policies.

Headquartered in Oakland, California, Greenlining’s approach connects community leaders with policymakers, researchers, and private sector leaders. Acting as an incubator of new policy ideas, Greenlining is a bridge builder between people, communities and government, and an advocate to build momentum for transformative change. Greenlining designs and supports policies designed to open doors to opportunity, recognizing that America’s racial wealth gap was created by deliberate policy choices and it will take deliberate, race-conscious choices to end it.

Greenlining’s Leadership Academy has trained and empowered over 1,000 young leaders since 1996. Graduates have gone on to occupy influential positions in government, business and the nonprofit sector, including multiple elective offices and a seat on the California Supreme Court.
