Who are your loyal soldiers?

Simon Goland – creator of the Right Livelihood Quest – often uses the concept of “loyal soldiers” in his work. Loyal soldiers are the defenses within us that keep us safe in our youth but continue to “drive the bus” of our lives long after they are needed.

For me, the key lesson is that even our most unconscious, destructive behaviors are usually there to protect us. They have played vital roles keeping us safe at important moments in our development. Our work now is not to get rid of them, but to befriend, honor, and thank them for their service. Our work is to assure them that they can finally put down their weapons. The grown, mature version of ourselves is in charge now.

Some of my loyal soldiers are The Addict, The Perfectionist, The Know-It-All, Shy Guy, The Deadly Silent One, The Optimist, The Achiever, and The Planner.
