The pendulum

This week, I’ve been frightened and angered at the abortion restrictions coming out of the Deep South of the U.S. In times like this, my practice is to allow for this anger, sadness, and the sense of urgency that goes along with them, to be without succumbing to despair. For me, it helps to remember that no great change is a straight line up; it always comes in gains and retreats, swing backs of the pendulum. More importantly, I remind myself that the big moves “backward” can also be seen as the pendulum gaining more energy, a sign of even bigger moves forward just on the horizon.

What do you do to maintain urgency, without giving into despair?
