We often decry technology for distracting and disconnecting us. We seem to believe it’s more natural, wholesome, and productive to be without many of the devices we enjoy today.
There is probably some truth to that. But what’s also true is that we simply would not or could not be having the same conversation about racial justice and police brutality that we are having today without our technology.
Millions of us can now witness brutality, bigotry, and other injustices as if we were standing right there. This proximity makes it next to impossible to ignore or to explain away these ills as many of us have done so often before. It has been absolutely vital to raising awareness and urgency.
So next time we feel compelled to disparage modern technology, maybe we can at least take a moment to be grateful for all the possibilities for change it has opened up for us.
